6-9pm Gallery Reception and Writers’ Night
August 8, 2008

“Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and pain of it no less than in the excitement and gladness; touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it, because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace. Frederick Buechner

Psychology is both art and science in practice. With this exhibit of art, photography and writing by psychologists, Fort Worth Area Psychological Association celebrates creativity in the human spirit. As practitioners we encourage creativity in living, whether problem-solving or meeting challenges, maintaining relationships or changing a community. We believe creativity is available to all, and is fundamental to wellness and life satisfaction. Creativity is a strength that can be increased with persistence and hope. We encourage art making and writing for the joy of self-expression and the potential for healing. By sharing the unique perspectives offered by these individual artists, we hope to communicate the value of deep attention to life and its wonders.

Fort Worth Area Psychological Association Discussion Group

The Discussion Group began in 2000 as an alternative form of monthly meeting which emphasizes a discussion format to complement our periodic Continuing Education programs. Dr. Kate Wyatt initiated the meeting and served as Convener for its first three years. Dr. Gail Brothers-Braun has served as Convener since 2003 until 2008. Dr. Stephanie Darsa became our new convener in 2008.

Mythic Image

Our mythic image of the Discussion Group inspires the format. Envision "the campfire scene” in sagas of the hero’s journey. That’s the part of the story where the brave comrades celebrate their triumphs with feasting, lament their losses, retell their battle tales, sharpen their tools and weapons, rest and renew their strength, strategize to overcome perils still ahead on the road, and prepare to return home with the boons of the quest. The years ahead promise formidable dragons and abundant treasures. See you at the camp fire.

Meeting Format

  1. We meet from 5:00 – 6:30 on the second Friday of each month at Ruffino's Italian Restaurant. Food and drink may be ordered during the meeting as desired. Separate checks are provided, with a 20% tip added to each bill. After the meeting ends, participants may continue talking or stay for dinner afterward as desired. The food and ambiance are excellent, the location is good, and food cost is consistent with its quality.
  2. All current Members and Life Members of FWAPA are invited to participate.
  3. This forum is intended to be wide-open for topics of interest to any participant present. Topics may include thorny cases, ethical questions, philosophical issues, theoretical issues, technical issues, practice issues, political issues, economic issues, personal issues, or anything else that interests anyone.
  4. Members are expected to treat the meetings with discretion and respect for confidentiality of all concerned.
  5. No reading or preparation is required, but participants may share copies of articles if they choose to do so.
  6. There are no attendance expectations, and it’s ok to arrive late and/or leave early.
  7. We begin as soon after as two people are present and end promptly at 6:30.
  8. A convener provides a bowl and note paper.
  9. Participants use the paper to write down topics for discussion, then fold the cards and put them in the bowl.
  10. The convener draws out a paper at random and reads it to the group.
  11. The group discusses that topic until ready to move on to another card.
  12. If a participant has a pressing concern, they may ask the group for priority.
  13. Topics not drawn during the meeting will not be held over, but may be placed in the bowl again next time.
  14. The group self-selects and maintains its own size. We are not seeking or expecting huge attendance.
  15. Our intention is to protect the process nature of the group from any task orientation or formal structure.
