Lying to Patients: Ethical Concerns
Presented by:
Drew A. Curtis, Ph.D., LP &
Leslie J. Kelley Ph.D., LP
The American Psychological Association values integrity as a core principle. The APA code of ethics addresses various aspects of honesty: accuracy of presentation of training and experience, degrees held, credentials, and other areas. The use of deception in regards to the therapeutic relationship has received less attention.
Objectives:
1. Discuss the ethics of psychotherapist deception
2. Review clinical examples and experiences
3. Review research findings
4. Obtain recommendations for future areas of research, practice, and policy.
